The Israeli Navy is conducting testing of an advanced radar system produced by Israel Aerospace Industries that has been installed on one of its missile ships, the company said Wednesday. The Advanced Lightweight Phased Array ELM-2258 can simultaneously identify multiple aerial or maritime targets. It offers "one of the most advanced operational solutions in the field of naval situation picture and its light weight enables it to be installed on a large variety of maritime platforms", IAI said. The system uses digital active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology that enables the radar beams to be steered. It can detect, classify and track targets and then integrate the data into guided missile systems. IAI said the ALPHA ELM-2258 will upgrade the operational capabilities of the navy's Sa'ar 4.5 and Sa'ar 5 missile boats. Nine ALPHA radars have now been installed on Israeli missile ships, with two more scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2017.
