US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced new legislation aimed at slashing legal immigration to the US by 50 percent annually. The bill cuts the number of refugees permitted to enter the country by half and limits the number of green cards issued to those seeking to reunite with family members residing in the US. An unidentified White House official was quoted as saying the bill is intended to create a skills-based immigration system. However, it is unclear whether there is sufficient congressional support for the legislation.
