US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Wednesday launched an attempt to convince the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt and Saudi Arabia to lift their embargo on Qatar over its support of terrorism. He met with Saudi King Salman and then with the four Arab foreign ministers in the Saudi port city of Jeddah, hoping to persuade them to accept Qatar's signing Tuesday of a memorandum with the US to combat terrorism financing. Tillerson, who is visiting the Persian Gulf to deal with the crisis, said Tuesday in Doha that Qatar is "the first to respond to President Trump’s challenge at the Riyadh summit to stop the funding of terrorism". Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE severed diplomatic and aviation ties with Qatar in early June over its support of terror and ties with Iran.
