Elor Azaria, an Israeli who was convicted of manslaughter over the killing of a subdued terrorist while serving in the IDF, decided not to appeal to Israel's Supreme Court, and on Thursday requested the IDF chief of staff to commute his 18-month sentence. The step came after consultations with his family.
In a letter to Lieut. Gen. Gady Eisenkott, Azaria said he would not have shot the terrorist if he had known that the terrorist was not carrying a bomb. He asked that his sentence be commuted to community service. According to his family and friends, Azaria decided to request a pardon so that he and his family can avoid any further suffering, and return to normal life as soon as possible.
