The chief of staff Monday appointed Col. Shai Klapper new commander of the Golani Brigade in place of Col. Shlomi Binder. The appointment is subject to the defense minister’s approval.
A former head of the IDF training center, Col. Clapper has long experience in command of combat operations and received a citation. Born in Kfar Saba, he lives in Elei Zahav and is married and father of four.
Founded during the 1948 the Israel-Arab war, Golani is a regular service infantry brigade, one of the IDF’s five. Its emblem is a green olive tree, its soldiers wear brown berets and it is one of the IDF’s most highly decorated infantry units. No model of military discipline, the Golani Brigade has nonetheless produced three chiefs of staff Mordecai Gur, Gaby Ashkenazi and the incumbent, Gady Eisenkott.
